White Sands, New Mexico. The sun had just crested over the horizon as I climbed to the top the dunes at White Sands in New Mexico. The golden color is an illusion. The sand isn't sand at all. It is Gypsum, a pure white mineral. Because it is white, it takes on the "color of the day." At dawn the reflected light is gold in color as shown here in this image.
